Reading is my passion. Till date I have 100’s of books while some of the characters and story lines would stay with me forever, some where really really hard to read even a single line more. From the amount of books I have read, I have concluded some points which are must for a Bestseller
1.Characters
We all have one or more characters that are going to stay with us forever. A good book should have characters that affect the readers and connect with them. It doesn’t matter whether they are real or fictional but in that book they should be real enough to connect with the readers.
2.Narration
Narration should be entertaining and gripping. There are thousands ways of describing sun rises from the east but the one with the most picturesque narration will help readers imagine the scene easily. And this make them hooked to the story. For eg., there are tons of love stories available in the market still only some stories touch your heart because they have a gripping narration.
3.Words
Yes! you heard it right words. Use correct words. Often a times I have read books which has sentences with no meaning at all or at times the meaning is very deep and relevant but because of wrong choice of words they make no sense. Words are the soul of a book if it isn’t true it won’t work. I am not saying that use only intellectual or complex words but the words which can be felt. Words which carry emotions. Which brings me to my next point.
4.Emotional connect
Have an emotional connect with your readers. It can be any emotion thrill, love, lust, lost, happy, sad, anger. Emotions help to connect with the book and their characters better and even make them last longer in the minds of the readers.
5.Plot
I kept this point in the last because it is not that very important for me but it is the essential part of any book. For this I would just say that plot of any book should make sense. Like if you have great characters, you are emotionally invested in the book but if it has no story I don’t think so it would work.
These all are not sure shot formula of a Bestseller but according to me all these points contributes a lot in the success of a book.

Absolutely correct. Agree with all your points.
Plus, I think the title and the blurb add that extra edge to the book and makes it award-winning combined with your points.

I like the way you pointed out to parts of the book that makes it a bestseller. Like Romila added earlier, I would add a deep fresh research idea is a major there. Giving a purpose/motive to the reader. Fabulous attempt!

Best Sellers are always made on one central point and all the other points like characters, narration and rest all are built on the central point. Loved the way you pointed out

Totally agree with all of this point, and I would also like to mention that marketing is the crucial part of becoming a book bestseller. 🙂 Example : Chetan Bhagat (Sorry I don’t know if you like his books of not )

See I think marketing can help you to sell your books but it wouldn’t make it a bestseller reading wise

Agreed with all the points! Emotional connect is the gist of any book i think! Along with that, flow of the story and how detailing is done is important!

Totally agree with your post. Though, bestseller obviously need a bigger idea, but it cannot happen without the story, characters, plot and most importantly, correct words. Great blog! 🙂

I completely agree with novemberschild. A good research is equally important. There is dialogue in a Tamil movie ” A lie should always have a few truth in it to make someone believe”.
A fiction book should have some real facts or close to life to get readers attention. That’s is only possible with good research.

Totally agree. Even Fiction should be realistic.

Bestsellers are built on a big idea. Not just some old thing regurgitated in a new way. It’s something fresh and interesting. You must find an idea that will get readers excited to pick up your book. This goes for fiction, nonfiction, advice, how-to, and memoir. A small idea for a book results in small sales. And a book idea, well, you get the picture. J.R.R. Tolkien spent years developing the languages upon which his entire world would later be built. Don’t neglect the importance of nailing a big idea before you begin writing. And don’t rush the research.
